History of Traditional Kung Fu Center
Biography
南北國術研究社由創辨人霍偉樂先生於1981年在加拿大溫哥華市正式成立,館內主要傳授兩大門派傳統中國武術,其一是由香港南派名師周漢興師傅傳授之周家洪拳及南方獅藝,其二是由北方有中國最後一個鑣師之稱的山東太極螳螂門第七傳名師趙竹溪師傅,傳授之一套完整太極螳螂門武學,其中包括基本功、拳套、兵器、單招、對練、博擊、擒拿手法、木人樁及排打氣功等等,及另有一套訓練有潛質學員成為一個正式專業教練,而再由教練提升為一個有武功、武德、有胸襟、有遠見、有真材實學的師父,而非一般只為追名逐利的師傅。本會宗旨為以大家庭方式去教授及接觸學員,要大家堅守自己的門派特式,認真學習。並接受及尊重其他門派。鼓勵學員參加不同大小的比賽及講座,以增長武術的知識及見聞,以印證自己本身的武功的層次。本會會規:嚴禁打鬥、生事、私自表演、批評別人門派,以武德為尚,南北國術研究社至今2006年已在加拿大有二十五年歷史,而霍師在加拿大之武館十多年前已交由學生接管,自己則走遍世界各地,包括中國境內名山大川去遊學,增長見聞,希望能達到武學的更高境介,突破自我。
2000年至2002年間,霍師曾留在武當山三豐武術學院內,擔任英文老師及武術教練。2004年間回加拿大在愛民頓市,另辦一所南北國術研究社,並在溫哥華之舊武館提拔了一個精英學員袁兆輝,於2005年6月1日正式收納為竹溪太極螳螂門第九代之傳人,把整套竹溪太極螳螂門武學,毫無保留地傳與袁兆輝,並且更得到香港竹溪太極螳螂門總會的審核通過,由趙林妙玲師母簽發第三十七號畢業証書,此証為第九傳人的第一張証書,而袁兆輝亦由當天開始正式接管加拿大愛民頓市南北國術研究社,並專注發揚竹溪太極螳螂之武學,而霍師亦返回香港穩居,並繼續其遊學生涯。

Mr. Galen Fok established the Traditional Kung Fu Training Center in the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada since 1981. (The Center) has 2 main systems of traditional Chinese martial arts being taught there. One of these southern systems. The Chow’s Family Hung Gar Style (周家洪拳), which includes southern lion dance, from the teaching of renowned southern style Master Chow Hon Hing. The other is from Northern system. Shandong Tai Chi Praying Mantis Style (山東太極螳螂門 ) that is transmitted by the 7th generation famous Grand Master Chiu Chuk Kai, who was also celebrated as the last professional caravan escort from northern China. Grand Master Chiu taught a complete system of Tai Chi Praying Mantis, which is a study of martial arts that consists of fundamental training, pugilistic forms, classical weapon, individual techniques, partnered drills, sparring, grappling method, wooden dummy training, and impact training (Iron-body Chi Kung). Furthermore, there is a program that brings up students with great potential to become professional coaches. Upon becoming a coach, the candidate will further develops himself as a bona fide Master whose qualities includes martial skills, virtues, openness, and vision. By no mean will the coach becomes a teacher. Who concerns only of personal gain.
The principle of the Center is to teach and reach out to its member as family. It requires everyone to maintain the integrity of the characteristics of the system and study seriously. At the same time, it accepts and respects other systems. It encourages student members to participate in various formats of competitions and seminars in order for them to expand their knowledge and experience which in turn will help them to reflect their martial art skills and capacity. The Center’s regulations prohibit public brawling, instigating trouble, unauthorized performance, criticizing or slandering other system or style. Martial virtues are highly regarded.
In 2006, the Traditional Kung Fu Training Center in Canada has been operating for 25 years since its inception. Master Fok has delegated the teaching responsibility to his student in Canada about a decade or so ago. He took the opportunity to travel around the world including those famous regions of China in order to expand his horizon. He aspires to reach for higher plateau of martial study and break through the confines of self.
Between 2000 and 2002, Master Fok in the capacity of English teacher and martial arts instructor sojourned in San Feng Wu Dong Institute (三豐武術學院 ) on Mount. Wu Dong. At 2004 Master Fok promoted an outstanding student, Andrew Yuen, from the ranks of existing Traditional Kung Fu Training Center (Vancouver); while he opened a new branch of the center upon returning to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He formally accepted Andrew Yuen as a 9th generation disciple on June 1st, 2005. He transmitted the full syllabus of Chuk Kai Tai Chi Praying Mantis system in its entirety without reservation to Andrew Yuen. The Chuk-Kai Tai Chi Mantis Chinese Boxing Gymnasium Alumni Association audited and approved the certification. A certificate (No. 37) was issued and signed by the widow of Grand Master Chiu, Madam Lam Mui Ling. This certificate marks the official beginning of the 9th generation discipleship. Andrew Yuen has taken officially the reign of the Edmonton branch since his certification. He is now focused on promoting the art of Chuk Kai Tai Chi Praying Mantis. Master Galen Fok has returned to Hong Kong and continues his travel and study.
